We’ve had this weekend’s much anticipated Dream Theater show at The Cap on our minds for quite some time now, so it’s no surprise that the county has plenty of other exciting (but not nearly as metal) events lined up, too. From a grim house of curiosities to a globally touring Beatles tribute band, there’s no excuse to stay holed up in the house for the next three days.
For the Film Freaks
YoFi Film Fest, Yonkers
We’re already in the midst of the 4th annual Yonkers Film Festival, but that’s no reason to catch a serious case of FOMO. You still have the opportunity to hit the red carpet reception tomorrow before a showing of Weiner, dubbed the “Spinal Tap of politics” for it’s hysterical insight into Anthony Weiner’s attention-arousing sex scandal. Even better, Saturday and Sunday will be their most jam-packed days yet, boasting more than 100 features, shorts, and documentaries plus a selection of the top films from Brooklyn Film Festival’s 2016 kidsfilmfest. Our resident film lovers over here recommend checking out Saturday’s silent-film series from Thanhouser Studio, one of America’s earliest motion picture studios that once had a studio in New Rochelle during the early 1900s, which includes their 1911 version of Cinderella. It’s bound to be a ball.

Obvious puns aside, the mansion’s corridors will be abounding with legends from the 1812 folklore mainstay Grimm’s Fairy Tales, creating an appropriate balance between eerie and fun, perfect for teens and even those daring youngins. If you’re unfamiliar, Grimm’s Fairy Tales include some of storytelling’s most widely recognized characters, many of which were reinvented into their more familiar Disney selves, like Sleeping Beauty and Snow White. This event is not recommended for the bashful.

These guys are more than just a “convincing” cover band, having toured from Las Vegas to Atlantic City and further overseas. So for one night, forget that John may no longer be with us (and we’re still quite unsure about Paul), and jam out with the gang to your favorite Beatles hits from a tribute band like no other.

The Giver, Valhalla
Most of us read it at some point in our awkward middle school years, but when brought to life through Eric Coble’s re-adaption of the Lowry-classic, The Giver’s message of taking control of one’s own destiny becomes much more tangible. The National Players will be bringing the production to Westchester Community College’s stage this Saturday, and with 67 years of innovative theater experience, their performance of The Giver is bound to be impressively powerful.
For the Rocky Horror Fans
Live Rocky Horror Floorshow, Tarrytown
Every year, you and the gang gather at your house, nuke the popcorn, and cuddle on the couch to sing along with The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Give that tradition a little twist this Saturday with Tarrytown Music Hall’s live performance, featuring veteran and current Rocky Horror performers with decades of experience bringing Dr. Frank-N-Furter and his ensemble of outlandish characters to life. For an old-school cult experience, this is where you should be heading.
