What It Means for the Hearth to Be the Center of the Home

Bedford architect Carol Kurth designed this cozy space around the concept of the hearth as the center of the home. “Warm hues and orange accents embody the color of glowing embers and the warmth of family,” she says.

Just off the family room is the “homework room,” a quiet, sunlit space that does double duty for weekend play dates. “We created a long custom worktable with removable dividers along one wall for personalized homework stations,” Kurth says.

“Along the other wall, the idea of relaxed reading on the proverbial porch swing inspired the playful indoor porch ‘swing bed,’ a comfortable place to curl up with a book and to store puzzles and games below.”
