What A DJ Loves About Westchester

Anne Hutchinson. Not the Puritan character from American history, but the elementary school I attended in Eastchester.

Bronx River. From Tuckahoe to White Plains, I love exploring the paths that follow along the river and parkway.

Capitol Theatre. I’m so glad Peter Shapiro decided to bring this classic Port Chester concert venue back to life.

Debbie. My wife of 42 years. We met on a staircase at Eastchester High, and she is still the love of my life.

Eastchester. Where I grew up and went to school. (And where I have gotten every traffic ticket in the past 10 years!)

Family. Debbie and my three kids—Robbie, Allie, and Lucie—are everything.

Great food. My preferred restaurants are Meritage, Moscato, and Savona in Scarsdale, Lusardi’s in Larchmont, and Morgans Fish House and Seaside Johnnies in Rye.

Horses. They always walk past my backyard on the paths at Saxon Woods. There’s something so peaceful about sitting and watching horses go by.

Italian deli. Though they suffered a devastating fire this winter, Salumeria Mimi in Scarsdale is the spot for fresh prosciutto di Parma and homemade mozzarella.

Jimmy. Don’t call me Jim—that’s what my mom called me when she was mad at me.

Kids. There is no finer place than Westchester to bring up your kids. The schools, communities, parks, and people cannot be beat.

Listeners. I owe every bit of my success to my listeners, many of whom have been with me on the air for more than 40 years.

Music. In 1970, I called WABC-FM in New York City to request a song and was accidentally connected with an important radio executive. It turned into an intense conversation about music, and, before I hung up, I had a job in broadcasting.

Natural beauty. In any season, there is no more beautiful place than Westchester. I especially love Larchmont’s Manor Park with its walkways, gazebos, and Long Island Sound views.

Open Door Family Medical Centers. I served for many years on its foundation board, and I’m proud to call the administrators and staff my friends.

The Peak. I joined just as the station went live in spring 2004 and have been there ever since.

Quaker Ridge. The section of Scarsdale where I live and raised my kids. The  community is the finest the county has to offer.

Rye Town Park. My favorite stroll: from the nature preserve at the north end, behind Playland, down the boardwalk, out onto the pier, then back along the Long Island Sound at Rye and Oakland beaches.

Stamen Animal Hospital. The best at caring for my dogs, Skippy and Luca. It’s run by a team of women veterinarians in New Rochelle—Drs. Violi, Colon, and Kaminski.

Tutta Bella in Eastchester. Big drinks, consistently good Italian food, and very friendly staff.

Untermyer Park. Noted photographer Bob Gruen took many pictures of John Lennon here. It’s fun to walk around following in the footsteps of past luminaries who may have strolled the park.

Vodka. My preferred drink (Tito’s Handmade, please)—straight up with olives and shaken, not stirred. I drink it at Garcia’s in Port Chester, where I can get up close and personal with rock bands.

Walking. For a 5K, the ring around Purchase College is perfect. I also love walking the tracks at Scarsdale High School, Eastchester Middle School, and Iona Prep.

X marks the spot in Mount Vernon where I was born. From this point, you can draw a 10-mile radius and see where I have lived my entire life.

Yellow jackets. I’m allergic. I once had to get a ring cut off my finger after a bee sting caused intense swelling.

Zzz. I never seem to get enough. I often listen to talk radio in the middle of the night and am up very early in the morning every single da
