Westchester's Karen Magee Breaks Gender Barrier In Union Election

Karen Magee will lead one of New York’s largest union federations.

Harrison elementary-school teacher Karen Magee has been elected by members of the New York State United Teachers to serve as the union federations’s first female president.

“Our team stands for change and our work begins now,” said Magee after her victory. “That includes taking on the tough fights and communicating clearly with decision makers at every level. We will be the voice they cannot ignore. We will defend public education and public service. Period.”

Magee said the election had “revitalized” the union citing a record high participation in the election. NYSUT represents more than 600,000 professionals in education, human services, and health care, and is affiliated with the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association and the AFL-CIO. According to their website, NYSUT advocates the improvement of working conditions, quality of education, and healthcare for the people of New York.
