Westchester's Best Off-the-Beaten Path Coffee

Change up your traditional java routine with a visit to either (or both) of these local spots

Place: Antoinette’s Patisserie

Product: Sharkbite Cold-Brew Coffee

Baking occurs on premises at family owned Antoinette’s. Co-owner Kus Beham roasts the coffee beans himself. One of his concoctions is a cold-brew offering named Sharkbite. “Cold brew is less acidic and less bitter because you’re not using hot water, ” he explains. Beham steeps his cold brew anywhere between 12 to 18 hours and then filters out the grinds. And one of the best things about this product is that if you love it as much as his regular customers do, you can take it home. Antoinette’s sells growlers for $24, or you can bring your own growler from home and fill it for $17, similar to at beer breweries. Beham claims a newly filled growler can last up to a month in the fridge.

You can also find Sharkbite at some local bars. The Mill in Hastings-on-Hudson sells cold brew on tap, as do Brazen Fox in White Plains, and Harper’s in Dobbs Ferry, the latter of whom uses it in specialty cocktails.

Steelcut Oats slow cooked with added fresh fruit, milk, cinnamon, and maple syrup on the side.

Not persuaded? There’s also a wide variety of espresso drinks and regular coffee at Antoinette’s, as well as light fare and an assortment of freshly baked pastries. The atmosphere is relaxed and happy, an ideal place to kick back and enjoy your caffeine buzz.

Place: The Moonbean Café

Product: Iced Coffee

The Moonbean Café, located in Briarcliff Manor in what appears at first glance like someone’s residence, is the definition of a hidden gem, quite literally tucked away behind branches and bushes. Inside, there’s all the traditional items you’d expect, like pastries, wraps, breakfast items, and a variety of coffee beverages.

But the shining star is their iced coffee, which comes in flavors like hazelnut, chocolate hazelnut, French vanilla, Kahlua, toasted almond, and Hawaiian coconut. Uniquely, the varities don’t come from sugary syrups, but rather, are infused during the roasting process, leaving you with a spectacularly bold taste that isn’t too sweet. And the toasted almond does indeed feel like you’re drinking an Almond Joy, we promise.

According to Moonbeam owner Abby Wallace, customer favorites come down to a toss-up between the house blend, incorporating a mix of light and dark roast, and the Hawaiian coconut, adding that each brew “really doesn’t need sugar.”

Not to mention, Moonbeam’s dim lamp lighting and warm interior make it a cozy coffee shop lover’s dream. On a beautiful day, opt to sit outside on the porch.
