Over the weekend, Croton’s Audra McDonald made history by winning the Tony award for Best Performance By an Actress in a Leading Role for her portrayal of Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill. With six Tonys, she now holds the record for most Tony awards in acting categories by a single performer.
Right behind her with five Tonys each are Julie Harris—a former Irvington resident— and Angela Lansbury. The male performer with the most Tony Awards in acting categories is Boyd Gaines, who has won four Tonys.
McDonald also has three Emmy nominations and one Grammy nomination under her belt. Her other five Tony awards have been won for her performances in Carousel, Master Class, Ragtime, A Raisin in the Sun, and Porgy and Bess.
McDonald will be peforming in Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill through August 10 at the Circle in the Square Theatre in New York City.
On July 7, McDonald will perform at an ADD special benefit reading of the screenplay to The First Wives Club at the Mainstage Theater, also in the City. All proceeds will benefit The Actors Fund’s Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Iniative.
