Westchester is known outside the county as an affluent suburb of New York City. And, while many who live here are financially well-to-do, many Westchester residents are struggling financially and can’t afford adequate housing — or, sometimes, any housing at all. Without the foundation of safe and affordable housing, it is extremely challenging for people to strengthen other areas of their lives.
A-HOME is a Pleasantville-based non-profit 501(c)3 organization that acquires, develops, rehabilitates, and manages affordable rental housing in Northern Westchester for low-income older adults, people with disabilities, and single-parent families.
On November 14, you can support this wonderful organization — and enjoy fabulous food at the same time — at A-HOME’s Harvest Food & Wine Festival at St. Mark’s Church in Mount Kisco. Lots of delicious cuisine will be on offer, from Mediterranean to Ethiopian to seafood and Italian. Participating restaurants include Exit 4 Food Hall, Frank & Joe’s, G.O. Kosher, La Camelia, Mediterraneo, Mt. Kisco Sea Food, Siegel Bros., Travelers Rest, and Zalibela. There will also be a carving station and a wine tasting from Best Wine Purveyors.
“To give you an idea of the need in Westchester, we have residents who have lived in the woods, a car, overcrowded insecure or unsafe housing, and in shelters. Some were unable to purchase sufficient food; others were lacking medical care,” says A-HOME’s executive director, Debbie Haglund. “Once people are in safe, secure housing they can begin to move forward in addressing chronic health problems, job skills and other issues.”
Proceeds from A-HOME’s Harvest Food & Wine Festival will support A-HOME’s programs. Tickets for the event, which takes place from 6 to 9 p.m., are $50 per person or two for $80 in advance; $60 per person or two for $100 at the door. For tickets or more information, visit www.a-homehousing.org.
