The New York State Department of Labor reported in August that July’s unemployment rate for the Hudson Valley Region was 5.7 percent. That’s up from 5.3 percent in June 2014 and down from 6.7 percent in July 2013. In July 2014, there were 64,800 unemployed in the region, up from 59,800 in June 2014 but down from 77,700 in July 2013.
Westchester’s unemployment rate, 5.5 percent, is up slightly from June’s 5.1% and down from 6.4 percent in July 2013. Westchester has the third lowest rate in the seven-county Hudson Valley region at 5.5 percent (but highest among our closest neighbors, Putnam and Rockland).
From July 2013 to July 2014, the Westchester-Rockland-Putnam tri-county area saw the largest job gains in education and healthcare (+ 3,200) and professional and business services (+2,000). Over the same period, losses were concentrated in government (-1,400) and trade, transportation, and utilities (-1,100).
