Westchester Runners’ Clubs Worth Joining

Call it the wolf-pack effect. Get back into the groove or push yourself further with the camaraderie and competition you’ll gain from joining up with one of these local running clubs.

Westchester Track Club

With both a nationally registered elite track team and a rec team that meet weekly for structured workouts, the club welcomes runners of all ages and abilities. The recreational group and running classes meet during the spring, summer, and early fall for hour-long classes, coached by founder Mike Barnow, designed for long-distance runners. There are three 10-class running sessions each year ($100/session for members; $140 for non-members). The elite team meets year-round and competes in races locally and nationally.

Taconic Road Runners Club

This Northern Westchester-based group is also open to all ages and levels. Every Saturday at 7:30 am, members meet for a long run (up to 20 miles with no set pace) along the Croton Reservoir. For a more intense workout, runners can meet with Jack Brennan Wednesday evenings at the Rockefeller Preserve to
partake in different challenges each week. Yearly
membership rates, including discounts on races and the club’s newsletter, are $10 for students under 19; $20 for adults; and $30 for families.

NewRo Runners

More than 200 members of varying skill levels make up this Southern Westchester runners’ community that meets Saturday and Sunday mornings at 7:50 am  for an 8 am run. The route changes from week to week and is published in the weekly newsletter, along with a weekly evening meet-up for track work. Nonprofit NewRo Runners is also a member of the Road Runners Club of America and a registered team with New York Road Runners. Annual dues range from $15 to $25 depending on when you join.

Rivertown is committed to creating fundraising events benefitting local charities—the club has donated more than $45,000 to different causes—and to making running fun. Year-round runs take place at 8 am on weekend mornings at Sleepy Hollow High School and on Thursday evenings beginning at Bridge View Tavern, also in Sleepy Hollow (open to non-members). An initial $25 membership fee comes with a t-shirt and a discount at the Westchester Road Runner store in White Plains.

Van Cortlandt Track Club

VCTC is as dedicated to socializing as it is to running. A popular weekly event is a trail run through Van Cortlandt Park and Tibetts Brook Park, followed by breakfast out. VOTC is open to athletes of all different abilities, there’s never a set pace for runs, though many members participate in local races and New York Road Runners races. (Anyone can join in on a run to see if they’d like to join.) Membership (junior and senior $10; single $25; family $35; and lifetime $500) benefits include discounts at Westchester Road Runner and Eastern Mountain Sports in Scarsdale.
