If you’ve ever caught yourself unsure of how to correctly dispose of a recyclable item, you’re not alone. In an effort to make recycling information more accessible, Westchester County launched the app Recycle Coach. Residents and visitors can download the free app on their phones and have all the solid waste and recycling information at their fingertips. The app connects you with the correct local recycling and disposal information, so you won’t have to question whether or not you’re recycling correctly.
“Ultimately, the service takes the guesswork out of recycling, empowering residents to make smarter disposal decisions and take an active approach to reducing household waste,” says DEF First Deputy Commissioner Lou Vetrone.
The app uses image recognition technology to scan and identify items to provide the necessary recycling information. This makes it very convenient when you aren’t sure how to recycle an item. Plus, knowing the impact of daily waste could inspire residents to ease up on their waste footprint. The app offers optional recycling event alerts, education tools, and the tools to help you make purchasing decisions to reduce waste in Westchester.

In addition, the app includes a “What Goes Where?” search option with all the local disposal information and collection requirements for both common and uncommon items. Recycling Coach is available for free download on desktop computers and mobile phones. It can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play.
“Recycle Coach compliments DEF’s current education efforts including the Recycling HelpLine, website, and educational flyers, offering another way for residents to access accurate recycling information,” Westchester County Executive George Latimer notes. “DEF looks forward to working with municipalities to begin using this free app, boost participation, and improve recycling rates countywide.”
