The Golden Apple has been bandied about for decades as the county’s sobriquet, an allusion to its prosperity; it never caught on. Although, there was that professional basketball team in the United States Basketball League in the mid-80s, the Westchester Golden Apples, but they folded after two years (and with a lousy record of 14–33).
We think it’s time for a new and improved nickname, and in that spirit, we put it to you in an Instagram poll. Weeding out the near misses (The Bougie Apple), the uninspired (The Little Apple), the just plain silly (Westchessy), and the perplexing (The Rusted Penny), we chose the four best to see what our followers thought. Here are the results:
