Excited for the start of the season in Westchester? Here’s what to know before you cruise on over to your favorite golf courses.
Retirements Bring New Pros
A number of head pros retired last year, setting off a wave of replacements at some of the county’s top clubs.
Century CC: Nick Yaun jumped over the stone wall separating Brae Burn from Century to replace Nelson Long as head pro of Century, who retired. Yaun had been at Brae Burn for 13 years.
Brae Burn CC: Drew Billard, assistant at the club for five years, following graduation from Methodist University, takes over the head-pro position.
Siwanoy CC: Brian Giordano replaced the retiring Grant Turner, moving over from Westchester Hills, where he’d been head pro since 2019.
Westchester Hills CC: Chris Marinaro joined Westchester Hills after six years as head pro at Trump National in Briarcliff Manor. He had previously served as head pro at Muttontown.
Trump National GC: Cian Curley, former assistant pro at Noyac on Long Island and GC of Purchase, takes the head-pro spot vacated by Chris Marinaro.
Pleasantville CC: Tom Saliano, well-known teaching pro at Pleasantville, steps up this year to replace Sharon McQuillen, who retired.
Sleepy Hollow GC: A.J. Sikula comes from the storied Inverness Club in Toledo to replace David Young, who retired after 20 years at the club.
Port Chester Native Wins Unique Scholarship
Jeff Stein, a golf course architect in Port Chester, has been awarded the first “World 100 Club” scholarship. It will enable Stein to travel in 2023 to study the great golf courses of Scotland, recreating the trip made by Charles Blair Macdonald in the late 1800s. World 100, a private international golfing society founded with the goal of playing each of the World’s Top 100 courses, partnered with the American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA) to create and fund the annual fellowship for a golf course architect early in his/her career.
Pehquenakonck CC Centennial
Winged Foot isn’t the only Westchester club celebrating its 100th birthday this year. North Salem’s Pehquenakonck Country Club opened in 1923 as well. The “Peke” as it is known, is an underappreciated 9-hole gem of a course that features 2,012 yards of shot-makers’ golf, with mind-bending doglegs and heart-thumping elevation changes. The club is semiprivate and is known for welcoming youngsters and others new to the game.
