Westchester Business Community Mourns Passing Of Former County Executive Al DelBello

Well-known Westchester politician and attorney Alfred DelBello passed away on Saturday at the age of 80. He was Westchester’s first Democratic County Executive, elected three times in the 1970s and 1980s. His long and distinguished career also included positions as mayor of Yonkers, lieutenant governor, and partner in the White Plains law firm DelBello Donnellan Weingarten Wise & Wiederkehr, LLP.

DelBello, a Lewisboro resident, had reportedly been ill for several weeks. Several Westchester leaders made statements about DelBello’s passing:

County Executive Robert Astorino noted on Saturday, “It was with great sadness that I learned today of Al’s passing. We were from different parties, but we were good friends, and I always appreciated his advice and counsel. Perhaps the greatest advice he shared with me, and something I’ve always adhered to is, always make sure you get home and spend quality time with your family. The job is hectic, but always make time for your family. And today, the thoughts and prayers of my family go out to the DelBello family.”

William M. Mooney, Jr., CEO of the Westchester County Association, said: “We are deeply saddened at the passing of Al DelBello, our chairman emeritus and one of Westchester County’s greatest visionaries…Al saw what was possible and masterfully moved sometimes implacable forces in order to improve the quality of life for all those living and working here…Al was an astute observer and a careful listener; he was persuasive and he was commanding. He fearlessly stood up for what he believed was right…Above all, he treasured time spent with his family, colleagues, and close friends. On a personal level, Al was a true mentor to me. We communicated on an almost daily basis, and I will sorely miss his guidance and leadership.”

In an interview with The Journal News, Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano said: “When Al DelBello was county executive, he ran a professional government. Great things happened in Westchester while he was there.”

And State Senator Terrence Murphy shared thoughts on Facebook: “My thoughts and prayers are with the family of former Lieutenant Governor Al Del Bello. A Lewisboro resident for some years now and one of my constituents, he was legendary in New York State politics and accomplished a great deal as County Executive from 1974 to 1982. He will be sorely missed.”
