Fourteen years have passed since the attacks on the One and Two World Trade Center buildings in 2001, and the United States has stayed true to its promise to never forget. This weekend, there will be several events around Westchester, and many volunteer opportunities, dedicated to the remembrance and recognition of those who passed on that historic day.
The Westchester County 9/11 Memorial Ceremony will take place in Valhalla, New York on Sept. 11 at 7 pm. There will be a candlelight ceremony at “The Rising” memorial at Kensico Dam remembering the 111 Westchester residents and 12 former residents who lost their lives 14 years ago.
Two ceremonies were planned this weekend in Yonkers: this morning at the Yonkers 9/11 Waterfront Memorial on Water Grant Street at 8:30 am, and later tonight at the 9/11 Monument in Conor Park at 7 pm. Mayor Mike Spano, city officials, and the families of 9/11 victims will be in attendance.
At 8 am this morning, the White Plains Recreation and Parks Department held a remembrance service at Liberty Park on Lake Street. The city flew six American flags from City Hall in remembrance of the six White Plains residents who died on Sept 11, 2001. Also, the ceremony included wreath laying, prayer, poem readings, and tree planting.
Tonight at 6:15 pm, The Mount Kisco Volunteer Fire Department invites people to join them at 100 Main St. for a memorial service. There will be light refreshments at the Mutual Firehouse after the ceremony.
At 4 pm, Cortlandt, Croton-on-Hudson, and Buchanan will dedicate a memorial at Croton Landing, meeting at the north end of Elliot Way in Croton-on-Hudson.
In Rye, volunteers at Village Green will create thank you cards with Rice Krispie treats attached to them for local first responders, from 4:30 to 5:45 pm. After, there will be a commemorative ceremony from 6 to 7 pm beginning at the Fire House on Locust Ave and moving to the gazebo at Village Green.
