Untermyer Park in Yonkers, once one of the finest private gardens in the country, is being brought back to its former grandeur, thanks to the Untermyer Gardens Conservancy.
William Welles Bosworth, who also created the formal gardens at Kykuit, designed the original gardens in 1916, but years of neglect have taken their toll. Now full-time horticulturalist Timothy Tilghman is focusing on restoring the classic, walled Persian garden—known as the Greek Garden because of the architecture surrounding it—near the park’s entrance, before moving on to the surrounding park. We don’t mind that it will be slow going—it gives us a reason to go back again and again.
