Distance by car: 2½ hours
Sister property to the Relais & Châteaux-branded Ocean House just four miles down the road, the Weekapaug Inn has been a community center and touchstone for generations of families who summer or live on the Rhode Island shore. This $17 million renovation is its second rescue. The original Weekapaug Inn, built in the 1890s, was destroyed during the New England Hurricane of 1938. The inn was then relocated and rebuilt in 1939 in the more protected, magnificent, “pond-side” location on which it now stands.
ROOM: Choose “Pond View” or “Cove View” rooms; all are different, though each sports hardwood floors, glass showers, marble baths, and sumptuous Frette bedding. There are no TVs in the rooms, though you can opt to have one set up at no charge.
BOARD: No need to leave the premises. There are two restaurants in-house; a formal Main Dining Room offers a modern interpretation of New England cuisine, while the SeaRoom is a more casual eatery upstairs. The resort offers a traditional clambake every Thursday in season.
ONLY HERE: Enjoy an afternoon on Weekapaug’s private, two-mile barrier beach, a conservation area from which you can see Block Island. Or take a complimentary wellness class in the Fenway Annex fitness studio.
WHILE HERE: Walk on the beach with the Inn’s resident naturalist. The Inn also arranges bike tours and fishing charters from neighboring Watch Hill.
FACTS: Rooms and suites start at $190 and go up to $1,950 a night (plus $24 per person resort fee). They include a welcome amenity. WiFi, a stocked pantry, valet parking, resort activities, and all tips.
