Weekend Getaways at Repurposed Hotels: Diamond Mills Hotel & Tavern

Distance by car:  2 hours

Resurrected in the spirit of the former paper mill then dusted with an understated glitz, the 30-room Diamond Mills Hotel is one of the newest properties in the cadre of Small Luxury Hotels of the World. The hotel, perched on a cliff overlooking the Esopus Creek, is somewhat of a personal—and ambitious—project for Tom Struzzieri, founder and CEO of Horse Shows In The Sun (HITS), Inc., an events-management company that produces hunter/jumper competitions over the summer in Saugerties. Struzzieri developed the property partly as an upscale lodging option for HITS participants. Given that the former Martin Cantine Paper Company built the picturesque dam to provide power for its mill, plans are afoot to tap into that same hydroelectric power in order to generate an estimated 40 percent of the hotel’s energy needs. There are winks to the former mill, with brick and stone walls throughout the small lobby (where complimentary wine and cheese are served daily from 5 to 7 pm), public areas, and the onsite restaurant.
ROOM: Subdued and classy, each room is angled to maximize views of the surging water over a man-made dam. Ask for room 104, the Queen Supreme Room, a double queen with large patio overlooking the dam.
BOARD: The hotel restaurant, The Tavern at Diamond Mills, is a soaring, bright, two-story atrium, with views out to the overflowing dam and river. Like many establishments in the Hudson Valley, it is crammed with CIA grads.
ONLY HERE: Walk down the back stairs to the hotel’s private kayak dock on the creek and take a spin on the Esopus into the Hudson, or go out on a hike with a resident naturalist who will guide you through the Catskills and provide a gourmet picnic.
WHILE HERE: Budget Travel magazine deemed Saugerties one of America’s Coolest Small Towns, so explore the shops on Main Street, which has two great independent bookstores: Inquiring Minds Bookstore and Our Bookshop (just off Main).
JUST THE FACTS: Rooms range from $250 to $600 per night and include an afternoon wine-and-cheese hour, free WiFi, free valet parking, and continental breakfast.

Rooms at Diamond Mills are subdued and classy.
