The Frances Hartmann And Stephen Katz Wedding

“We had a lot of photos strung up,” says Fran. “At the ceremony, there were childhood photos of me and Stephen. At dinner in the barn, we had wedding photos of our ancestors. At the reception, we had photos of the two of us from our trips.” Their table numbers showcased photos of the pets the couple has had over the years.

DIY touches continued throughout the wedding. Fran’s mother, a painter, created the invitations, menus, and programs. The bride crafted colorful bunting out of scrapbook paper.

The bride and groom had a two-tier wedding cake for themselves, as well as 10 separate cakes in four flavors for their guests. Each cake had a subtle geometric print like dots or diamonds, recalling the patterns in the bunting, and each was displayed on a white cake stand.

Guests danced to bluegrass music under the glow of strands of white lights. Then the bride and groom walked under an archway of lit sparklers, which were held by the guests. Recalls Fran: “Seeing people interacting and getting along and becoming friends and making travel plans from totally different friend groups and families—that was the best part.”
