Our Executive Editor on This Year’s Weddings

Recapping this year’s Westchester/Hudson Valley Weddings edition.

I got married on the same date as my aunt and uncle, 45 years later. One of my favorite memories of our reception is inviting them onto the dance floor to dance to their wedding song—“We’ve Only Just Begun” by The Carpenters.

More than that, I just love looking at their wedding photos. My aunt wore a gown with long sleeves that wouldn’t look out of place in a wedding today, though she paired it with a wide-brimmed hat that would probably be a tougher sell. My uncle had Buddy Holly glasses that were just a little bit thicker than the rectangular frames my husband wore on our wedding day. They were posed and formal in their photos, which were taken with gorgeous black-and-white film.

There’s something romantic about looking at old wedding photos. It’s no wonder so many people choose to display wedding photos of their parents and grandparents at their receptions. Looking to the past can also be a tremendous inspiration for a wedding. If you want to recapture the glamour of days of old, we can help. Start by choosing a historic venue—one that gives a nod to the area’s industrial past. You can find some suggestions here. Or, if The Great Gatsby made you yearn for an event filled with Art Deco details, see how you can dress like Gatsby and Daisy here. And from the Deco Gatsby to the Edwardian Downton Abbey, all kinds of vintage influences are on display in our wedding gown photo shoot, which took place at the historic Capitol Theatre in Port Chester.

Then again, new can be very exciting, too. I love the recent trend of couples mixing bold patterns into their wedding décor. See how you can do it, without overdoing it. And while I love the traditional bouquets of roses and peonies, if you’re looking for some wild, out-of-the-box alternatives, florists tell us their favorite unconventional choices.

Of course, deciding between the traditional and non-traditional isn’t an either/or choice—you can always mix the two. See how six local couples, using vendors from the area, made their weddings their own in our Real Weddings section.

Whether you found your wedding inspiration by looking forward or looking back, we want to see how you made your wedding your own. If you’d like to have your wedding considered for Westchester/Hudson Valley Weddings, submit photos at westchestermagazine.com/wedsubs. I can’t wait to see what you’ve come up with!
