Unemployment in Westchester Area Improving

According to the New York State Department of Labor, area job seekers are finding what they’re looking for

Things continue to get better for Westchester job seekers, and results released Tuesday by the State Labor Department attest to the county and the surrounding area’s improvement in unemployment.

This past August, the unemployment rate for Westchester dropped 1.2 percent when compared to the same month last year—from an August 2013 rate of 7.5 percen to 6.3 percent this year. Currently, Westchester County has the fourteenth lowest rate of joblessness in the state.

The surrounding area also has positive trends. In its preliminary August 2013 rates released yesterday, the New York State Department of Labor reported decreased unemployment rates for the majority of counties throughout the state, including Rockland, Sullivan, Dutchess, Orange, and Putnam counties.

In the past year, the state has added 126,800 private sector jobs, with 22,700 being added in August 2013 alone. With the jobs that were added this past month, the number of private sector jobs in New York State is at an all-time high.
