Just two words on an ingredient list can force someone to put an item down and walk away − “Contains Nuts.” Now the allergen community and non-allergen friends alike can snack worry- (and nut) free, thanks to two Larchmont moms.
Rachel Farscht and Lani Steinberg created Bo & Ty Sweets about a year ago after they bonded in a coffee shop over how they struggled to find safe treats for their two highly allergic children, Boaz and Tyler. “There are safe-baked goods on the market but there was a hole for candy,” says Steinberg. When shopping for their sons, they rarely came across candy that had zero risk for cross-contamination with nuts. Farscht says, “I knew something was missing from the marketplace: a nut-free product line that is easily accessible and clearly marked as being safe for nut allergy sufferers.”
Steinberg spent twelve years in promotional candy and confections, designing and creating custom candy for corporate clients. Farscht’s background is in strategy consulting and finance. The two combined their knowledge with their experiences as moms of kids with nut allergies to create Bo & Ty Sweets. They knew their product’s consumer base, as they are also the target market.
Their line of candy includes gummies, jelly beans, sour worms, and chocolate. Each comes in several different colors and sizes. All products are manufactured in a dedicated peanut-free and tree nut-free facility and there is no cross-contamination of nuts. Candies can be customized for special occasions such as birthdays, baby showers, graduations, and local sporting events.
Initially, Bo & Ty Sweets’ consumers were the local allergen community with whom the two moms were already connected. But now, since most business comes from their website, their reach has grown to include clientele nationwide.
Customer Dara Liotta shops Bo & Ty Sweets because her daughter is peanut-allergic. Liotta says, “It’s wonderful to have a candy store where I don’t need to worry about her safety and where she can have anything she wants. It keeps her feeling like she is not just an ‘allergy kid.’”

These sweet treats can be purchased at Standing Room Only in Scarsdale, Cherry Lawn Farm Market in New Rochelle, and the Larchmont Meateria, among other shops in Westchester and New Jersey as well as on their website boandtysweets.com.
