These Westchester Jewelry Makers Design Pieces With a Purpose

For White Plains resident Mara Perlmutter, jewelry is literally a lifesaver. After her mother became housebound, the jewelry-industry veteran designed a personal emergency-response device that her fashionable mother would consider wearing.

Perlmutter’s brand, called Trelawear (trela is “alert” spelled backward), offers battery-operated, water-resistant pendants that feature elegant, hand-cut faceted resin stones in various styles and colors. The line is created by the same manufacturers who produce jewelry for brands like Coach and Givenchy.

On the back of each piece, a button connects the wearer to a U.S.-based safety consultant, providing 24/7 emergency help to those even without cellphones. Trelawear is partnered with MobileHelp, a national provider of emergency-response and health-management technology. The collection is available online at www.trelawear.com for $148 each (the monitoring service plan is an additional monthly charge).

Jennifer Graziano (above) created RememBar (below) to honor loved ones who have passed on.

Crafted by fourth-generation funeral director Jennifer Graziano of Coxe and Graziano Funeral Home in Mamaroneck, RememBar is a jewelry line that offers timeless wearable pieces to help individuals commemorate their loved ones who have passed on.

Graziano sought the help of designer Ward Kelvin (who has worked for Tiffany & Co. and David Yurman) to create fine necklaces, bracelets, and rings with a hollowed-out bar that can hold a small portion of cremated remains, a favorite perfume, or locks of hair, inscribed on the side with the word “remember” and a birthstone. Graziano was inspired to create the collection by her faith that we will be reunited with loved ones in Heaven. The collection ranges in price from $170 to more than $300.
