Hidden Pond & The Tides Beach Club

I could spend the summer here with you, Hidden Pond. We’ll pick flowers from The Farm, your communal garden, and ride bikes borrowed from Pete’s Bikes next door. When breakfast is hung outside our door at 8:30 every morning, we can eat in the screened-in porch attached to the cottage, with coffee piping hot in a thermos. Every now and then, we’ll spring for a meal at Earth, where Chef Justin Walker cooks gourmet farm-to-table fare. When we’re not roaming your 60 wooded acres, I’ll grab a massage at Tree Spa in one of your treehouse-like private treatment rooms, accessed by wooden bridges that wind through the woods. In fact, just as I’m situating myself on the massage table, you’ll probably be collecting wood for the evening bonfire. And later, while it burns, we’ll lounge in one of the daybeds behind the fireside circle of Adirondack chairs. You can always greet me with your sign at the entrance that reads, “Drive slowly, breathe deeply.” Yes, time will pass not in years but in mindfulness and deep, deep breathing.

That said, it will have been a hard choice between you and your sister property on Goose Rocks Beach down the road, The Tides Beach Club.

The Tides stole my heart first. I’ll never forget when we met. I drove through Kennebunkport and fell for its patriotic New England charm—lobster joints, cedar shingles, and the scent of salt water winding through marshland at high tide. This was love, too. I knew it the minute I laid eyes on her yellow, 21-room Victorian figure from 1899. A path through her fenced-in lawn led to a wide, covered porch packed with yellow-cushioned rocking chairs servicing views of a calm, turquoise sea. I stayed in one of two Jonathan Adler-designed suites, private balcony and all. That’s where, that very first night, I watched the sky dim until the gentle bob of moored lobster boats became invisible under the night sky.

The Tides’ yellow motif carries through to the chaise lounges on Goose Rocks Beach

But it could be you and me, Hidden Pond. When it’s the beach we want or a drink on that porch, we can head to The Tides—thankfully, you share facilities. We’ll always return to your tucked-in-the woods splendor, and, when we do, we’ll spread out in the cottage, dreaming of tomorrow’s breakfast delivery.

Explore: The Tides and Hidden Pond are five minutes apart by car, maximum, and offer a joint schedule of activities. Look for yoga, group hikes, and evening bonfires at Hidden Pond and beach-centric activities at The Tides, like stand-up paddle-boarding lessons. You’ll want to spend time exploring Kennebunkport, which is chock-full of art galleries, maritime possibilities, gorgeous homes, and double-take ocean vistas. Pete’s Bikes is part of Hidden Pond and free for guests.

Dine: Your trip is not complete without a meal at Earth at Hidden Pond. To give you an idea of how inventive and local the cuisine is, Chef Walker prepared a dish of tortelli filled with ricotta and stinging nettles from his farm, topped with oxtail marmalade and garnished with reindeer moss he found growing at Hidden Pond. Nunan’s Lobster Hut in Cape Porpoise, midway between the hotels and downtown Kennebunkport, offers fresh-caught lobster, served with plastic bib and all. The Tides has a restaurant as well; it offers a pared-down menu for beach service.

Insider’s tip: On your way out, stop at Snug Harbor Farm. Amid farm animals, you’ll find greenhouses packed with plants and flowers, sold and stocked by experts.
