7 Travel Essentials for Summer Jaunts in and out of Westchester

We can’t get your plane here on time, but we can share expert picks for products that will make the journey smoother and keep you healthier.

“Our luxurious travel throw sets ($110) are perfect when you’re on the go. It’s both a pillow and a great blanket when it’s cold on the plane. The snap loop is so easy to attach to a roller bag. I don’t leave for a trip without it!”

—Bets Miller,
Owner, Finch & Co., Rye

“The portable electric kettle from balbali ($29.99) is the best purchase I’ve ever made for traveling. I pack this, tea, Copper Cow single serve pour over coffees, and instant oatmeal. All I need is some milk when I get to where I’m going, and I have instant breakfast.”

—Kathleen Reckling, CEO, Arts Westchester (and competitive fencer who travels often for matches)

“Easy, healthy snacks to bring with you? Sugar-free jerky, seaweed snacks, a cheese stick with an apple, and mini guacamole or mini hummus with baby carrots. I also like to bring small bags of nuts, packets of peanut butter or almond butter, and packets of tuna just in case my flight is delayed. I don’t eat them on the plane because people can have nut allergies and tuna is just so stinky, but if you’re stuck in the airport for who knows how long, they’re great in a pinch.”

Misfits protein bar

“I’ve been really into Misfits plant-based protein bars, especially the caramel fudge. With 15g of protein and less than a gram of sugar, it tastes like a candy bar but keeps my nutrition on track.”

—Jillian Salomone, Personal Trainer & Owner, CarbonX, White Plains

Journal and blanket

“Since I’m often working when I’m traveling, bringing along my laptop and troubleshooting WiFi are always big concerns. I love this iLive TechPage + smart notebook ($109.99) because I can write notes in it. When it connects to the internet, it syncs with the app on my phone to turn everything I’ve written into a document.”

Sunscreen

“Unprotected sun exposure can age the skin dramatically. For travel I recommend wearing sunscreen that has zinc and/or titanium to provide a complete UV block. Almost all children’s sunscreens have those ingredients. Airplane windows block most UVB rays, but not all UVA rays. The higher altitude also increases exposure to UV rays—even more reason to wear sunscreen while flying. My favorites are Neutrogena Sheer Zinc Dry-Touch Sunscreen SPF 50 and CeraVe Hydrating Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 Face Lotion.

“When I’m traveling with my kids, ages 4½ and 20 months, the Stokee JetKids Bedbox ($229) is a must—it acts as a ride-on suitcase for navigating the airport and then turns into a bed on the plane.”
