Tips for Keeping Your Heart in Great Health

Since hearts are top of mind in February, we asked Dimitrios Bliagos, MD, an interventional cardiologist at White Plains Hospital and Montefiore Medical Center, to share some advice about how to keep yours in great shape.

Does preventive heart health change over time and with age?

It doesn’t really change much with time. Young people can and should lead heart-healthy lives by eating a well-balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables as well as exercising regularly and avoiding tobacco use. Those over the age of 59 should follow similar lifestyle recommendations.

What regular tests should a healthy person have?

Every person should have a yearly checkup. Regular cardiac testing includes a blood-pressure check, cholesterol check, and, depending on someone’s individual risk factors, an EKG.
