This Popular Startup is Changing The Way Clothing and Goods Are Donated

With its first Westchester location, the Pennsylvania-based donation company GreenDrop gives Westchester residents a new way to support national charities.

GreenDrop is changing the way clothing and home goods are donated in White Plains. With 30 freestanding locations nationwide as well as mobile donation units that collect approximately 100 tons of donations per week, this Pennsylvania-based startup is making major waves in the way goods are recycled. After successful locations in Philadelphia and New York City, GreenDrop is expanding to White Plains with a new location at 660 North Broadway.

GreenDrop has partnered with three national charities — Military Order of the Purple Heart, The American Red Cross, and National Federation of the blind — to distribute donations collected from either GreenDrop’s brick-and-mortar locations or through home pickup services. To date, Greendrop has raised more than $20 million for these partners.

The company was founded in 2001 by entrepreneur Chris Stinnett, who conceived GreenDrop while working at his family’s thrift store business. “GreenDrop started servicing the New York Metro area with our Home Pick Up Service in 2012,” says Stinnett. “Our White Plains location is our first drop off location and plan to open up to 4 more over the next 18 months.”

For Stinnett, Westchester was an attractive location to expand GreenDrop’s services for several reasons. “Westchester is one of the best places to live and start a business in New York,” he explains. “It boasts impressive population numbers; national and international corporations do business there, and it has been identified as a retail hub for more than 50 years. This was a very easy decision to join the already flourishing community.”

While GreenDrop will benefit from an increased presence in Westchester, the company’s expansion remains firmly rooted in its mission to aid the area community. “With this site, we hope to continue our mission of doing good for the community, the environment, and our partner charities,” notes Stinnett. “We are excited to expand our donation centers operation into Westchester and we are proud to help residents maintain access to recycling by offering a convenient location for them to donate the items they no longer need.“
