Robert Nielsen, superintendent at Bedford Golf & Tennis Club, was honored this winter with the 2019 Excellence in Government Affairs Award from the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA). Superintendents are the unsung heroes (and sometimes goats) of the golf world, responsible for maintaining pristine conditions across hundreds of acres of golf course property.
Nielsen is a Bedford native who started at the club in 1982, while still in college, and became superintendent in 1991. When Nielsen was elected president of the Metropolitan Golf Course Superintendents Association in 2010, he set out to establish stronger relationships with the Westchester County Board of Legislators and the NY Senate and Assembly. He’s also been active in Washington, DC, and was a driving force behind the creation of the Best Management Practices program and the foundation that supports it.
