These Are the Best Things to Do in Westchester the First Week of June

Fans of the arts are in luck this week, with new exhibits and performances by locally and nationally-acclaimed artists running the gamut from digital to traditional, classical to punk, still life to live performance.

6/5-6/10 — Westchester Magazine‘s Wine & Food Fest!

You’ll have to excuse the bit of self-indulgence, but W&FF is truly one of the nicest things you can ever do for your tummy. Dozens of local chefs, vintners, restaurants, retailers, and food trucks will come together you bring your taste buds hundreds of wines and an uncountable number of flavor combinations.

Tuesday kicks things off with Salute! A Wine Tasting Tour of Italy at the Westchester Italian Cultural Center. Wednesday is Taste & Style at Savor Westchester, featuring a bartender shake-off! Thursday is one of our biggest events of the year, the Burger and Beer Blast which will crown this year’s Best Burger in the county! Friday will be An Evening with Westchester’s Tastemakers at the Ritz-Carlton New York Westchester in White Plains (tickets only sold in advance!) and Saturday is the Grand Tasting Village, where you can nibble and sip until you (figuratively) burst! Sunday closes things out with the Jr. Chef Experience back at Savor, and a Beefsteak Brunch with Nick Solares at Kanopi atop the Ritz-Carlton. Tickets are still available, so get yours while they last!

6/7 — A Global Celebration

As part of First Thursday Gallery Hop, The Yonkers Public Library Riverfront Art Gallery is debuting this month’s new exhibit, Covered: Celebrating Muslim Women. Yonkers artist Yusef Abdul Jaleel is an African-Amaerican Muslim revert, whose work in digital vector art is designed to celebrate the beauty, faith, modesty, and individuality of Muslim women from around the world, dispelling negative connotations put upon the variety of hijabs, niqabs, and burqas worn by Muslim women in different cultures. An opening reception will be held at 5:30 p.m., and the exhibit will run until June 24.

Other First Thursday art events can be found at Blue Door Art Center, Philipse Manor Hall, and Urban Studio Unbound.

6/8 — Shock & Awe

Hollywood legend Rob Reiner will be at The Picture House this week, giving Pelham a special advance screening of his new film Shock and Awe. The film, staring Woody Harrelson, James Marsden, Tommy Lee Jones, and Reiner, tells the true story of the journalists who first investigated the second Bush administration’s spurious claims tying Saddam Hussein to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Reiner will then take part in a Q&A session following the film.

6/8-9 — Vintage Sound

St. Paul’s Church National Historic Site in Mount Vernon will be holding some unique musical acts this Friday and Saturday. Saturday, learn all about colonial life along the waterfront from doctoral student Kathryn Lasdow at 1 p.m., along with interactive crafts like rope making and signboard carving. At 2:30, organist Kathryn Jones will perform on a re-conditioned 1830 Erban organ, one of the oldest working pipe organs in the country!

6/10 — Do Walk Into the Light

BTH (Break the Hold) is holding sunrise 2.5-mile walk at 4:30 a.m. at Pleasantville High School to benefit the program’s goal of providing resources and education related to mental health to parents and kids. The event, titled “Into the Light” is the first of a planned annual fundraiser by BTH, an organization founded after the tragic suicide of Pleasantville student Brian T. Halloran earlier this year.
