The Road Hog: Westchester’s Coolest Food Truck

There’s a lot of travel involved with being VP of global sales for technology companies, according to Gene Mastro of Yorktown. “I was on the road a lot, sometimes three weeks out of the month,” he says. “It was tough not to see my family.” After 25 years, it was time for a change. “I was looking for a different type of work, something my wife and I could do together.”

In May of this year, after purchasing a $4,700 truck and spending months in his garage retooling it, Mastro premiered the Road Hog (914-393-5800;, a food truck serving “things my wife and I like to eat.”

There are five macaroni-and-cheese varieties; six types of grilled cheese (including the Italian version, mozzarella e carozza); fish tacos; quesadillas; Karl Ehmer bratwursts; house-smoked pulled pork; Memphis-style coleslaw; and house-made sauces such as Angry Mayo (mayo and habanero chilies) and avocado crema (fresh avocado, lime, herbs). Mastro cooks while his wife Jacqueline serves as “customer interface.” It’s a tight fit in the truck: “It took a few months of bumping into one another before we had a routine down.”

Saturday is the busiest day. The Road Hog’s regular location is in a commuter lot off of Route 6 in between the Jefferson Valley Mall and the Taconic Parkway, Wednesday to Sunday 11:30 to 6 pm.

On Mondays, the Mastros shop for ingredients at Restaurant Depot in Port Chester and do prep work. There’s also an hour-and-a-half of cleaning Wednesday through Sunday evenings. “It’s a surprising amount of work,” he says, “but we love doing it—together.”
