The Private Shop in White Plains is the county’s new source for up-to-the-minute streetwear that’s hard to find elsewhere.
Sneakerheads, run, don’t walk, to White Plains’ The Private Shop (219 E Post Rd; theprivateshopny.com), a buy-sell-trade store that is now the go-to hotspot for fire kicks and trendy apparel you’d be hard-pressed to find elsewhere.
Co-owner Drew Thornton explains that while stores in the surrounding area, like New York City, don’t have appointments for months for consumers to purchase select gear, he has curated an unmatched assortment for in-the-know collectors.
As the nature of buy-sell-trade is that individuals sell their own worn or brand-new products to stores, which then develop a unique roster, it’s not uncommon for the shopping experience to be different than at a standard retail store. When purchasing retail, consumers typically see a style and then request a specific size; here, you’ll likely share your size first, with the hopes that some styles will be available in that size. The reason: Many styles are super-popular limited releases and previously sold out, which creates a guaranteed-exclusive experience.
The store, which also has its own eponymous label (T-shirts, snapbacks, beanies), has a steady offering of fan-favorites, like Yeezy slides and 350s, Air Jordan 1 Royal Toes, Telfar bags, Supreme hoodies, and Anti Social Social Club tees, though selections can change weekly. Ultra-rare items include Nike’s SB Dunk Low 7-Eleven (featuring the convenience store’s signature colorway). The 2020 collaboration, a Japanese-exclusive release, was canceled, so there is extremely limited quantity. They are sold upwards of $3,000.
Thornton and business partner Ricus Askew opened in White Plains after experiencing success with their other location in Myrtle Beach, SC. The two worked at Polo Ralph Lauren together in college a few years ago and were inspired by the company’s bear logo. When they decided to launch their brand, they created their own rendition. While the southern location does well with vintage offerings, the White Plains shop is also known for its new releases, keeping county shoppers on their toes for the latest and most popular drops.
