The Grenadines

Digital Detox on a Private Island

If Lost taught us one thing, it’s that no one wants to be marooned on a tropical island. But if that island is Petit St. Vincent, where there’s no cellphone service, no WiFi, and no TV, but plenty of understated luxury and relaxation, being marooned might be the best decision you’ve made in a while.

Finding an unplugged corner of the world isn’t easy. Direct flights from JFK to Barbados take about five hours. From there, it’s a 45-minute hop via propeller plane to the Grenadines’ Union Island, where you’ll board a speedboat for a short ride to “PSV.” A Mini Moke whisks you across the 115-acre private island to a one- or two-bedroom cottage with inlaid-stone walls, woven lighting fixtures, live-edge coffee tables, and edge-of-the-world views.

Going tech-free forces you to actually be on vacation and leaves lots of free time to snorkel just offshore, charter PSV’s sloop, Beauty, to Tobago Cays (you’re practically guaranteed to swim with sea turtles), hit the treetop Balinese spa, or learn to scuba at the Jean-Michel Cousteau dive center.

But the ultimate itinerary is to do nothing. Wake up to the sound of waves breaking over distant reefs and have a leisurely breakfast on your private bluff or beachfront terrace. Set out in search of a secluded stretch of palapa-shaded sand on the wilder West End Beach or snag the only two chairs at Jack’s Beach, to watch boats float by the harbor. Lose the day hopping in and out of the water, then sip rum cocktails with your toes in the sand at Goatie’s Bar, followed by dinner, and the rest of the night sitting under the most incredible dome of stars. Wake up tomorrow and repeat.
