Frances Hartmann and Stephen Katz celebrated their wedding in the Catskills with 110 guests, many of whom traveled from all over the country. They gathered at Full Moon Resort in Big Indian for a full weekend of activities. While most guests stayed in rooms onsite, a few of the couple’s friends camped in tents on the resort property.
The group stayed busy with activities such as a barbecue and bonfire on Friday night, as well as hikes and shared meals at the venue. Each night, the bride’s parents hosted an after-party, a big hit with the guests.
Fran, who works in immigration law and is going to law school, met Stephen, a software engineer at Etsy, in Portland through a mutual friend during an April Fool’s party in 2007. After dating for a few years, they relocated to Brooklyn. Fran and Stephen got engaged at Rockaway Beach in August 2012.
The rustic Full Moon Resort was an ideal venue for their early-fall wedding, which featured a neutral color scheme with “pops of coral, yellow, peach, and green.” Fran wore an ivory White by Vera Wang gown, which she says was “comfy and pretty.”

The couple didn’t have a traditional wedding party. Instead, they focused on family. Their parents and grandparents were in the procession, a friend of the bride’s family officiated the ceremony, and daughters of the bride’s childhood friend served as flower girls. Fran and Stephen honored his grandparents in a few ways: She used his grandmother’s handkerchiefs on the wedding day, and the couple had his grandparents’ wedding rings resized for their wedding bands.
“We had a lot of photos strung up,” says Fran. “At the ceremony, there were childhood photos of me and Stephen. At dinner in the barn, we had wedding photos of our ancestors. At the reception, we had photos of the two of us from our trips.” Their table numbers showcased photos of the pets the couple has had over the years.
DIY touches continued throughout the wedding. Fran’s mother, a painter, created the invitations, menus, and programs. The bride crafted colorful bunting out of scrapbook paper.
The bride and groom had a two-tier wedding cake for themselves, as well as 10 separate cakes in four flavors for their guests. Each cake had a subtle geometric print like dots or diamonds, recalling the patterns in the bunting, and each was displayed on a white cake stand.
Guests danced to bluegrass music under the glow of strands of white lights. Then the bride and groom walked under an archway of lit sparklers, which were held by the guests. Recalls Fran: “Seeing people interacting and getting along and becoming friends and making travel plans from totally different friend groups and families—that was the best part.”
