Deborah Delaney, a calligrapher and designer, met David Finlayson, the second trombonist with the New York Philharmonic, in 1996 while walking her Welch terrier and bichon frise in Central Park. David was walking his long-haired dachshund at the time.
They quickly became friends, but didn’t start dating until 2003. When they decided to get married, they knew they didn’t want a huge venue like the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens or an impersonal hotel. They heard about Blue Hill at Stone Barns in Pocantico Hills from Deborah’s daughter Alexis, who worked there one summer as a camp counselor at the Stone Barns Center for Agriculture. After just one visit, the couple was sold. “Nothing else was as appealing as Blue Hill at Stone Barns,” Deborah says. “It’s a beautiful location, we loved their philosophy and the quality of the food there was better than anywhere else for about the same price.”
Their dinner menu consisted of greenhouse greens and herbs topped with a farm egg followed by handmade cavatelli with locally foraged mushrooms and mascarpone. The entrée was wild striped bass with romanesco, cheddar, and purple cauliflower, mushrooms, and herring caviar sauce. In addition to wedding cake, individual cheese plates were served with seasonal accompaniments.
Carter Brey, the principal cellist from the New York Philharmonic, played the unaccompanied Cello Suites by Bach during the ceremony; the Hector Del Curto Eternal Tango Trio entertained guests afterward.

“I found a picture of a cake in Martha Stewart Weddings that I loved and the people at Blue Hill suggested I talk to Jay Muse at Lulu’s. But when I saw a design that he had done that incorporated bittersweet vine, I changed my mind. Lulu’s was great to work with—they even sent over an extra sheet cake to make sure we had enough cake!”
