Christian and Christine met six years ago when they both joined a co-ed softball team set up by mutual friends. Instantly, this bride recalls, they were drawn to each other and the two fell madly in like. That’s right… in like. The earth didn’t tremble, their hearts didn’t beat a synchronized pitter-patter. On the contrary, it was all really quite civilized and platonic.
While this suited Chris and Christine just fine, their group of friends who made the match had other ideas in mind for this twosome. One by one, each argued their case for romance, citing reason upon reason, but the couple just wouldn’t budge. For example, when one of their friends suggested a cozy Champagne and candlelight dinner, the two would instead grab a hot pretzel at Yankee Stadium. As Christine has been a long-term Muppets fan, one friend likened the pair to the famous romantic couple Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy, but not even that worked.
Apparently one day many years later, even Chris and Christine had to admit that, despite themselves, they were in fact in love, but how did that happen? Did they both wake up one day to birds chirping and angels singing love songs? Nothing doing. Over time, and when neither was paying attention, they fell deeply and completely in love.
On Labor Day weekend of 2008, and while vacationing with a huge group of friends on Lake George, Chris popped the question. Of course, the answer was a long-awaited and hearty “yes.” The couple was married at St. Joseph’s Church in Bronxville, Christine’s family parish. “I have received every sacrament at this church, so we both felt it was important to continue this tradition,” she says. Their gala wedding reception followed at Glen Island Harbour Club in New Rochelle. “The minute we walked in the ballroom, we could actually imagine ourselves dancing our first dance as husband and wife,” she recalls. “I later found out that my grandparents went out on one of their first dates at Glen Island and went to many romantic dances there in the late 1930s. This made the wedding all the more magical.”
A lovely cocktail hour was followed by a scrumptious sit-down dinner. The cake (a five-tier vanilla cake with cannoli filling) was the perfect ending to a magnificent feast with the cake topper, fittingly, none other then Miss Piggy and Kermit the Frog dressed in full wedding attire.
“We had a quote on the back of our ceremony pamphlets from the movie Angels in the Outfield that truly defined how we felt after the Yankees won the World Series and to be marrying our best friend,” Christine says. “Love is that can’t eat, can’t sleep, reach for the stars, over the fence, World Series kinda stuff…”
Sounds like a winning team.
