October is known for a multitude of things; to many women it’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, to baseball fans it’s when championships are won, to beer fans it’s Oktoberfest, and then of course there’s Halloween, Columbus Day, and leaves changing color. In the food arena, we all know it’s the time to get our pumpkin and apple picking on, but October is also—get those glasses of milk ready—National Cookie Month.
To celebrate, we sampled and rated (1 to 5) six cookie flavors from Rye-based Sara Snacker Cookie Company (and by “we” I mean myself hogging the favorites and then siphoning off the also-rans to my officemates).
Hot Chocolate (dark cocoa cookies with chocolate chips and marshmallows) Soft and delicious. This flavor disappeared the quickest. 5/5
Ice Cream Cone (baked with chocolate chips, vanilla chips, and sugar cone bits) Original concept and flavor. 4/5
S’mores (with crushed graham crackers, marshmallows, and chocolate chips) Another favorite was this ode to the classic campfire treat. 4/5
Lemonade (baked with lemonade and topped with lemon icing) Cool, lemony flavor that balanced sweet and tart reminded us of a hot summer day. 3/5
Chipnetzel (shortbread cookie with potato chips and pretzels) Crunchy texture was nice but we couldn’t taste pretzels or potato chips much. 2/5
Vanilla Milkshake (a vanilla milkshake in cookie form) Appreciate the concept but kinda underwhelming and well, vanilla. 2/5
Some flavors that fizzled in the R&D stage include Peanut Butter Oatmeal Chippy, Oatmeal Cream Pie, Triple Chocolate Overload, and Moose Tracks. (Note to Sara, send any rejects to our office, we’ll be happy to sample.)
Available nationwide but also locally at Fairway and Balducci’s, the preservative-free, trans-fat-free, artificial color- and flavor-free cookies retail for $4.99; sarasnacker.com
