Ever since kale stepped onto the health food scene, the leafy vegetable has been regarded by salad lovers, health experts, and vegetarians alike as the one of the world’s healthiest food. However, thanks to TIME’s list of the 41 best superfoods, we now know that all salads are not created equal.
Jennifer Di Noia, associate professor of sociology at William Paterson University, completed the study and published her findings in the Center for Disease Control’s Preventing Chronic Disease. Using the 17 nutrients that food experts at the United Nations and the Institute of Medicine consider most important, she ranked the foods based on how many nutrients they contain per calorie.
We were shocked to see watercress come in at number one, followed closely by Chinese cabbage, leaf lettuce, and parsley. The fan-favorite kale was slightly knocked off its leafy pedestal, clocking in at #15. Despite being two of the most fiber-dense foods, raspberries and celery didn’t make the cut.
Since the list is made up of all fruits and vegetables, any food mentioned is a safe bet for your health. Adding some of these powerhouses to your meal can lower your risk for heart disease and cancer.
