Many people find their daily workout routine to be boring and repetitive, often resulting in a lack of motivation or underwhelming results. Others have the right enthusiasm and drive, but lack the proper technique necessary to get the most out of their workouts. That’s why I searched Westchester for an alternative, something different from your typical “mega-gym.” I landed on Fitness Together in Bronxville, where owner/manager Lonnie Walton, a personal trainer with more than 15 years experience and multiple certifications from the National Academy of Sports Medicine, invited me to test-drive his fitness program.
Fitness Together, which has about 150 locations nationally, is focused on individual attention. They pair dynamic personal training programs—taking into account any physical limitations—with food and nutrition logs to make sure that clients are making positive choices both inside and outside of the gym.
Upon entering for my first session, Lonnie and my assigned trainer sat down with me to discuss how I felt about my overall health and what I should focus on achieving in the future. They also took several measurements including my height, weight, body fat percentage, and basal metabolic rate (BMR). By utilizing various pieces of equipment and technology, the staff was able to monitor improvements (or regressions) based on these specific measurements.
Both of my workout sessions included a brief warm-up period, which is provided for all clients, and then a series of high-intensity circuit exercises. My trainer, Adam, who’s certified as a personal trainer and as a strength and conditioning specialist, wrote out each day’s workout on the mirror and pushed me through about 45 minutes of intense training. It was not the equipment, which could have generally been found at any gym, but the attention to detail and use of the equipment that I found impressive. Adam stayed constantly engaged with my workout goals and designed challenging programs around them. From “goblet squats” to pushups, I felt my whole body working for every rep. And I certainly felt it the next day.
When looking for a workout alternative, it’s hard not to be impressed by what Fitness Together provides for its clients. Lonnie and his staff create a welcoming environment and a patient outlook, though they’ll push you to your limits while you train. With individual training sessions going for around $80, it’s a pricey but worthwhile investment for people of all fitness levels.
