Taste Of China In Tarrytown: Westchester's Latest Vegan Menu Offering

Meat-free versions of sesame chicken and other Chinese food standards that will bring in vegans and carnivorous eaters alike.

Vegans might not believe their eyes, but there’s nothing fake about it: a sandwich board in front of Taste of China in  Tarrytown, whose congee I’ve come to adore, announces “Vegan Dishes: Finally Here,” listing 14 chicken, beef, and shrimp dishes made with fake meat (the vegan edict being no animal products of any sort). The all-natural, gluten-free chicken, beef, and shrimp substitutes are made with either soy protein or wheat protein, sometimes including corn. Choose from General Tso’s, sesame, and orange chicken, or have your protein with hot sriracha sauce, black pepper sauce, broccoli, or mixed vegetables. (And that congee? You can get a vegetarian version if you ask.) Hooray for veggie love—vegan or not, sometimes one just wants a nice, juicy morsel of fake meat (seriously).
