With such a broad selection, it’s difficult to imagine a more apt place to pick your poison than the newish Midway Wine & Liquors (973 Central Ave, Scarsdale 914-874-5444; www.midwaywine.com).
The warehouse vibe might be intimidating at first (the 10,000-square-foot store is packed floor-to-ceiling with bottles), but, once you get your bearings, the selection is impressive. Wander the aisles on what could be described as a Wine Around the World Tour—many of the sections are themed by region of origin—and you’ll discover diversity around every corner.
Greek wine has begun to rise rapidly in popularity in the United States, but isn’t terribly easy to find. Midway’s collection includes the cherry-fruity Skouras Saint George Nemea, a medium-bodied red that is among the top sellers, according to store manager Erik Amend. Cross the Equator in a few steps to find South Africa’s Mulderbosch Vineyards wines—its Chenin Blanc is one of South Africa’s most heralded wines.
Aside from the quantity of the international selections, the store also uses its massive space smartly by hosting events. Midway’s calendar includes tastings from world-class distilleries such as The Glenlivet, meet-and-greets with winemakers, celebrity chef showcases, and even bottle signings from celebrities such as past guest Real Housewives of New Jersey star Teresa Giudice.
What sets Midway Wines apart from many other wine-emporium stores in Westchester, however, is its involvement with community organizations, like United Way of Westchester, through fundraising and catering. Take that community spirit and pair it with what Amend calls “old-fashioned customer service,” and you’ve got the makings of a new neighborhood favorite.
