Tag, You’re Invited!

Putting together a guest list is perhaps the most difficult part of planning a wedding. First you deal with constraints of numbers, since every venue has a maximum number of guests that it can comfortably hold. When the number of guests is small, you have to make sure the venue isn’t so big that it’ll “swallow” up the small group of guests. Also keep in mind how many guests are allotted to the groom’s family — and whether the people who are paying for the wedding get to decide who invites how many guests. Ah, the list goes on…

One bride asks: “I’m inviting about a hundred guests to my wedding — mostly friends and family — so I need to be careful about the numbers. I work in a small office with only seven people, including myself. Is it okay to invite just some of my office-mates, or do I have to invite them all?”

Dear bride: In order for office coworkers to be counted as “friends,” you must be socializing with them out of the office, at non-business related functions. If it turns out that those include only a few of your coworkers, then, yes, it’s okay to invite just a few of them. I think, however, that if you invite five of the six, you should invite them all if it’s possible. But keep in mind that if your friends from the office have significant others that you also socialize with, they too will need to be invited.
