Don’t like cupcakes? Move along, then. Nothing here for you.
But if you’ve ever stood on line for a cupcake at Magnolia Bakery in Manhattan, well—you needn’t bother. Not with Sugar Mama by Kim having just opened in the old Crush Wine Bar space in Larchmont. (Sadly, Sweet and Social up the street has closed, too.)
This Etsy bakery gone brick-and-mortar made its name with especially beautiful customized cookies, but in the store you’ll also find cupcakes, Italian sesame and pine nut cookies, yogurt parfaits with homemade granola, and blueberry muffins. There’s Colombian coffee and cappuccino, cushioned seating, and cupcake-shaped potted plants with a plastic cherry on top.

But let’s talk cupcakes: how the bottom is almost as good as the top, how you sink your teeth into its buttercream turban and wonder what magic produced its texture. An innocent-looking signature cupcake with pink frosting and white sprinkles is among the best I’ve ever tasted. Pineapple coconut, another signature flavor (developed from one of the bakers’ grandmother’s cakes), is a soft tropical breeze. One cupcake is topped with a homemade mini cannolo; others are contained in ice cream cones. I haven’t tried all the flavors (yet), but a mini size will make it hard to resist.
