Mornings are rough. Most people have their ritualistic cup of coffee—or two—in order to ease into the day. Luckily, there’s a new trend that is stirring up the breakfast game…literally. Meet the wondrous world of smoothie bowls, which as you might have guessed, are slightly thicker-than-usual smoothies eaten out of a bowl with a spoon. Accordingly, they can also be topped with extras ranging from almond butter to granola to fresh fruit. Simply blend frozen fruit, a liquid, and ice together, and then add toppings.
The acai bowl is by far the most popular version. Its namesake berry, which is native to South America, is frequently referred to as a “superfood” due to its high level of antioxidants, healthy fats, and fiber, and it kind of tastes like a cross between blueberry and cocoa nib. Below, we round up Westchester’s three best places to score yourself one.
The Pureganic Cafe, Rye
Previously known as Andy’s Pure Foods, this healthful eatery boasts four different acai-bowl options (rainbow, green, almond butter, and granola). Each uses acai as the base, but adds alternative fruits and vegetables such as strawberries, blueberries, or kale. The café is open seven days a week and also delivers.
Trailside Café, Yorktown Heights
Made fresh daily, these are tailored to your personal preference. The acai is mixed with banana and strawberry, and then topped off whatever you please, whether that’s more fruit, granola, seeds, or even almond butter.
Padaminas Brazilian Bakery, Mount Vernon (914-667-9101)
This Mount Vernon bakery has an assortment of acai bowl options, including one that combines bananas with honey. Brazilian bakeries were some of the first establishments to adopt this fledgling trend, and Padaminas does it justice.
Should you prefer smoothies in their more conventional, straw-sipped form, here are a few we recommend. Drink/eat up!
