When the hot summer sun comes out, the humidity is usually not far behind, and, as much as we love summertime, it can wreak havoc on our hair because heat + humidity = frizz. What to do? We asked five Westchester stylists to share their secrets for luscious summer locks.
1. Keep It Strong
Michele Lisa Milazzo of Michele Lisa Salon in Cortlandt Manor suggests leaving a conditioning product in your hair when you’re at the shore, which will also “protect hair against UV rays.” If you’re not at the beach but want a beachy texture, Milazzo recommends Redken Beach Envy Wave Aid “to tame and enhance waves and curls.”
2. Keep It Easy
For those looking for “more of a natural, soft feel without a lot of effort,” Nuriel Abramov of Numi Hair Salon in Rye recommends Matte Waves Texture Lotion by Oribe for loose, summery waves.
3. Keep It Covered
To keep color from fading and hair from dehydrating, Sandy Carino of Leah’s Salon in Scarsdale says, “the number-one thing is to keep hair covered in the sun.”
4. Keep It Smooth
To protect your hair and prevent summertime frizz, Diane Cermele of Salon POSH in Mamaroneck recommends a Keratin treatment. “This protein-enriched smoothing treatment packs protein into your hair and seals the cuticle, fighting frizz and adding shine. We use an organic Keratin here at Salon POSH, so it is completely free of formaldehyde.” Cermele says the treatment cuts blow-drying time in half and lasts from five to seven months. It ain’t cheap at $200 to $350 per treatment, but for those with unruly hair, it’s worth the investment.
5. Keep It Protected
Static Hair Salon style director Philip Faulkner’s go-to product for steamy weather? Smoothing Cream by label.m. “I love to use it pre-blowout,” he says. “It sets a base.” The cream will make your blow-out last, keep your hair silky, and protect against UV rays. If you’re more of a free-spirited type or want that fresh-from-the-beach look, Faulkner recommends that you “embrace your natural hair with beach texture” with a product like label.m’s Sea Salt Spray.
