See How One Local Food Fest Is Giving Back to the Community This Thanksgiving

Yonkers Wine & Food Fest is organizing a Thanksgiving feast for some of the area’s most in-need residents.

We were pretty stoked to tell you about the launch of the Yonkers Wine & Food Fest in 2017. Being something of a crew of experts when it comes to epic food celebrations, our motto is the more the better. That’s why, hot off her third annual food fest, the creator of this local shindig is organizing another local feast, this time to help the area’s homeless and needy.

This November 28, Yonkers’ Gisselle Acevedo will be hosting a hot Thanksgiving feast for upwards of 200 guests at Blue Bar & Grill, near Getty Square.

The Sharing Community, an overnight facility for the homeless, they just closed [their Getty Square location] and most of them still hang around there,” says Acevedo.

“We do a lot of community events and this is one that’s been on the list to be done for a while. We got the opportunity from the restaurant so we decided to put it together; we got a lot of help from a lot of vendors from past food festival events. I always do community things so this is something that’s normal in my household.”

The meal is set to include all the usual Thanksgiving favorites, from turkey and sweet potatoes to roasted veggies, cranberry sauce, stuffing and gravy, and even cake with hot apple cider. Roasted pork and rice will also be available.

The feast is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. (or for as long as the food lasts). Acevedo is hoping to feed 200 guests with donations from the local food and restaurant community, and, while seating is limited, to-go plates will be available so everyone can enjoy a hot meal.

For residents interested in helping the dinner even more, Acevedo says that Yonkers Wine & Food Fest will be accepting donations of canned green beans, corn, and gravy. Cash donations are unfortunately not possible this year but, in order to get the most food on the table, e-gift cards to local stores like Costco are acceptable.
