Super Lawyers, a rating service that evaluates lawyers in more than 70 practice areas, has cited three partners at Rye-based Dorf & Nelson LLP. Jon A. Dorf, Jonathan B. Nelson, and Daniel R. Alcott have all been recognized for their excellence and are included on the list of 2013 New York Metro Super Lawyers, an honor that is limited to only five percent of the attorneys in the state. Managing partner Jon A. Dorf was selected for primary practice work, Business/Corporate Law. Jonathan B. Nelson is being recognized for his Business Litigation, and Daniel R. Alcott is being acknowledged for his accomplishments in Non-Profit Law.

NEW BUSINESSES, RELOCATIONS, OPERATIONS
The county’s Local Development Corporation (LDC) has approved a resolution giving White Plains Hospital access to $108 million in tax-exempt bond financing to construct a six-story patient care building, five new operating rooms and an expanded outpatient radiology center.
MVP Health Care® (MVP) and Hudson Health Plan (Hudson), two nationally-renowned not-for-profit health plans, have finalized the transaction combining their two organizations after receiving New York State Department of Health approval last week. The two companies together will serve approximately 733,000 members.
The House of Sports, an indoor sports complex, and the Business Council of Westchester, have partnered to form the Business Council of Westchester Corporate Athletic Leagues. The goal of these leagues is to encourage fun and competitive athletic games, with the opportunity for industry professionals to socialize with coworkers and network with peers. Players are encouraged to form teams with co-workers, but individual player registration is also welcome. Leagues will start at the end of September or early October.
Grand Prix New York, the area’s leading indoor entertainment and team-building venue, will again expand on September 20. They’ll be opening the Art Garage, a new visual arts studio for children, teens, and adults.

Rye’s Jarden Acquires Yankee Candle for $1.75 Billion
Rye-based consumer products company Jarden expands its product offerings with the purchase of Yankee Candle for approximately $1.75 billion. The deal is expected to close early in the fourth quarter. Jarden’s brands include Crock-Pot, Mr. Coffee, and Coleman camping gear, while Yankee Candle is best known for its range of scented and seasonal candles and accessories. According to Yankee Candle President and CEO Harlan Kent, the buyout gives Yankee the resources and scale to strengthen its product development and distribution capabilities.
The National Science Foundation will provide $1.4 million to support a new program at Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry. The Mercy Intensive STEM Teacher Initiative is a five-year program that provides scholarships for students training in teaching science, technology, engineering, and mathematics at the middle and high school levels.
According to the second quarter forecast of Westchester County Budget Director Lawrence Soule, the county is on target for meeting its 2013 budget goals. At the six-month mark, the budget shows a deficit of approximately 0.5%, or about $10 million, compared to a shortfall of $30 million at this time a year ago.
ContraFect Corp., the Yonkers-based biotechnology company that creates drug treatments for life-threatening infectious diseases, has raised $11.8 million in financing from privately placed convertible notes. Company officers had initially targeted $5 million in financing. The funds will be used to develop ContraFect’s most advanced product, CF-301, a new bacteria-infecting viral enzyme that targets Staphylococcus aureus, a blood-born infection that kills 30,000 people annually in the U.S.

Music Conservatory Announces Jazz Brunch in Rye

Jazz guitar virtuoso Howard Alden, whose music was featured prominently in Woody Allen’s Oscar-nominated Sweet and Lowdown, and renowned trumpeter Warren Vache will headline Music Conservatory of Westchester’s annual Jazz Brunch on Sunday, Sept. 29.
