Ron Blacks' New Menu Is Surprisingly Diverse and Health-Conscious

As of June, Ron Blacks in White Plains has served up a more diversified, health-conscious menu, balancing out a longstanding focus on heavier, barbecue and meat-centric offerings. Owner Neal Alpuche and head Chef Joepi Van den Boomen, taking into account the latest in food trends and dietary restrictions, have crafted the new menu that includes such dishes as grilled watermelon, Mediterranean salad, and a black bean burger. Using color-coded dots, each dish is easily identified as vegetarian (green), gluten free (pink), or vegan (yellow). This is in response to the increase in health consciousness of their clientele. According to Chef Van den Boomen, it used to be impossible to sell fish on the city strip populated with many taverns and happy hour hangouts; now, it’s the main component in some of Ron Blacks most ordered dishes.

I had the pleasure of sampling a few of the most popular ones.

Chicken Lettuce Wrap

This four-piece app is loaded with chunks of grilled chicken, scallion, and avocado, served in lettuce leaves with Sriracha-sambal dressing.

Lime-Cured Tuna

A larger platter considered “for the table, ” it’s piled high with tuna carpaccio dressed in lime oil, shaved papaya, arugula, tomato, and Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese.

Tropical Tuna Salad

Favorite of chef Van den Boomen (and me as well!), this dish is chock full of seared tuna strips, shaved mango, tomato, avocado, banana chips, arugula, and wasabi vinaigrette.

Quinoa Wrap

This Mediterranean wrap is packed with quinoa, Israeli couscous, avocado, feta cheese, black beans, cucumber, red peppers, and romaine lettuce.

The menu still has plenty of heartier fare — ribs, cheesy bread, seven different burgers, pulled pork nachos, and bar pizza — but people looking for lighter options and/or those with dietary restrictions won’t feel left out for a good, casual meal.
