A great-grandson of Standard Oil founder John D. Rockefeller, Richard Rockefeller, died Friday morning at 8:15 when the small plane he was piloting crashed shortly after takeoff from Westchester County Airport.
The Piper PA-46 went down about a mile from the airport, near Cottage Road in Harrison.
Dense fog and low visibility were reported near the airport, causing Westchester County Airport to delay or cancel several morning flights.
Richard Rockefeller, of Falmouth, Maine was the only person on board the single-engine plane, and the only casualty. The 64-year-old doctor and father of two was an experienced pilot, according to family spokesman Fraser Seitel.
