Reynolds Lake Oconee Is a Dream Destination for Golf and More

A quick flight to Atlanta and a short drive through the Georgia countryside take you to a wealth of golf and other experiences.

Reynolds Lake Oconee began as a family retreat 100 years ago. But it’s no longer just the place your grandparents retired. It’s evolved in the last decade into a vibrant, upscale community built around activities designed to enrich the lives of residents and visitors from young families to engaged, energetic seniors. Seven championship golf courses and a vast 19,000-acre freshwater lake with nearly 400 miles of shoreline are just a few of the many features that draw fun-seekers from all over the country.

Golfers have long traveled to Reynolds to enjoy a fine collection of courses built by top designers in the game like Jack Nicklaus, Bob Cupp, and Rees Jones. Last year, Tom Fazio returned to the resort to open Richland, his second course at the property, on naturally rolling terrain with dramatic elevation changes and expansive views. The par 72, 7,090-yard course takes golfers on an adventure over and around a peninsula that touches water time and time again.

Also completely rebuilt in recent years is Great Waters, a Jack Nicklaus signature course that winds on a visually breathtaking and par-challenging route along the Lake Oconee shoreline. For a less intense round, visit The Preserve, designed by Bob Cupp, or its sister course the “Quick Six” that was added in 2016. Five of the seven courses are among the Top 20 in the state of Georgia.

Then there is the huge, watery play-ground, Lake Oconee, which can be enjoyed in endless ways, from high-speed runs across the open water to quiet paddling in secluded coves. Four full-service marinas enhance your boating experience whether it’s with your own boat or one of theirs. You’ll also find ample opportunities to jump on Jet Skis, paddleboards, kayaks, and canoes. And fishing? Of course!

Other active amenities abound. The Sandy Creek Sporting Grounds offers a clays course, shooting ranges, and an archery range, a separate angling lake for catch-and-release fishing, and an off-road driving course. There are fitness centers and pool complexes throughout the community, as well as tennis and pickleball courts, miles and miles of nature trails, and weekly cultural events including musical performances, public affairs discussions, and culinary demonstrations. And there are 11 distinctive restaurants on site, so you’re sure to find one (or more) that satisfies.

Whether you’re looking for a weekend getaway or are in the market for a luxurious second (or first!) home, Reynolds Lake Oconee should be at the top of your list. A great introduction to this destination is a stay at the Ritz-Carlton, a luxurious lake-side resort.
