Expect the same audacious, avant-garde design philosophy (e.g., a graffiti wall, lush black-velvet wallpaper in the dining area, and butterfly-rose-skull wallpaper in the bathroom) and skillfully plated modern Italian dishes by executive chef/owner Giuseppe Fanelli at 60-seat tredici SOCIAL, a spinoff to Purchase’s tredici NORTH. The location across from the Bronxville Metro-North last housed Kraft Bistro.
“The former restaurant was dark and dungeon-y,” says General Manager Michael Colucci, “so we put in a tin ceiling, plus sconces and hanging lighting fixtures.”
Due to the smaller overall space (the pint-sized kitchen barely fits two chefs), the menu is tighter than its Purchase sib. Artichoke salad with baby arugula and Sicilian EVOO; sautéed jumbo shrimp with Meyer lemon, roasted garlic, and white beans; and ham and cheese arancini are among the starters. Mains that excel are a refined take on chicken scarpariello using free-range chicken, sweet cherry peppers, crumbled sausage, and wild mushrooms, plus a pan-seared organic salmon with horseradish crust.
Fanelli is making his own pasta plus a variety of cured meats. A portion of ingredients come from Hudson Valley purveyors such as Meadowbrook Farm, Hemlock Hill Farm, and Ronnybrook Farm Dairy.
“Bronxville is a quaint, picturesque village that is family oriented with a solid dining scene, so we thought it would be a perfect match,” says Colucci.
