Restaurant Preview: Tannery

Tannery has a lot going for it. The bar area is full of 90-year-old details: antique glass, black-and-white photos of historic Harrison, and a stately 55-foot bar. Owner Ashley Lurie, previously a partner at Peaches in Norwalk and who owns Tannery with wife Awilda Pimentel, knows how to craft intriguing cocktails. The menu features homey American dishes, including an addictive burger with spicy shallot-sriracha sauce.

It’s a marked uptick from the dismal reputation of the space’s previous occupant. “Harrison Tavern left an awful taste in the community’s mouth, with terrible food and even worse service,” says Lurie, who took ownership in December. “It’s been a daunting task to restore it back to its former glory. The place has been a bar-restaurant since 1929.”

To bring the restaurant into 2018, Lurie put the focus on local sourcing. “The Hudson Valley has some of the richest farmland in the country,” she says. “We really wanted to highlight the wonderful things we can get out of our backyard.” Dishes run the gamut, from local-brew beer cheese to an elegant horseradish-crusted Hudson Valley duck breast. Cocktails and the craft-beer list, which has expanded since The Craftsman Ale House closed, features familiar names like Taconic Distillery and Bronx Brewery, among others.
